HAWK ONE – INSPIRATION TAKES WING

In 1959, The RCAF created the Golden Hawks aerobatic team on the 50th (Golden) anniversary of powered flight in Canada, flying six gold-painted F-86 Sabre jets. They thrilled Canadians from coast-to-coast for four more years before they were disbanded. For 2009, the 100th anniversary, Vintage Wings of Canada restored a former Golden Hawks Sabre (Hawk One) and flew it with the Snowbirds across Canada throughout the year. Meant only to fly for the centennial, Hawk One was so popular that it was used for seven more years to inspire young Canadians across the country to consider a career in STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Hawk One was retired in 2018.
